Portsmouth Friends of the Earth

About Us

Portsmouth Friends of the Earth meets rather irregularly (at present) at The Old House At Home, Locksway Road, Milton, Portsmouth at 7.30pm. Everyone welcome, member or not!  Please contact us for details of future meetings.

Portsmouth Friends of the Earth Association is a registered charity (no. 803036) which aims to raise awareness of environmental problems in our area and to provide education and training to combat these problems. We have two lively and on-going projects: Can-Do Composting and Grow To Eat Well in Portsmouth Schools (GTEW).

Can-Do CompostingProject

In 2002 PFoEA started the Can-Do Composting Project with a grant from Portsmouth City Council. The project employs a part-time worker who visits schools to speak about waste problems and composting techniques. School groups can also visit our composting demonstration site.

Grow To Eat Well in Portsmouth Schools

Thanks to a major Big Lottery grant, and generous matched funders, this ambitious 3-year project is now in its second year. Portsmouth schools are being encouraged to run their own allotments and produce compost from their food waste using composters supplied by the project. Pupils, staff, family, friends and neighbours of the school will learn how to grow their own vegetables on ground specially prepared on the school site. The project started with two ‘beacon’ schools, Charter Academy and Paulsgrove Primary, and will eventually bring in about 30 schools in the city. Two project workers travel between sites using a special electric vehicle, and an administrator looks after the office. Have a look at www.gtew.org.uk for all the details!

 Great News!

We won the Project of the Year at FoE’s 2010 annual conference in Reading!
