Portsmouth Friends of the Earth Association is a registered charity (no. 803036) which aims to raise awareness of environmental problems in our area and to provide education and training to combat these problems. We have two lively and on-going projects: Can-Do Composting and Grow To Eat Well in Portsmouth Schools (GTEW).

Can-Do CompostingProject

In 2002 PFoEA started the Can-Do Composting Project with a grant from Portsmouth City Council. The project employs a part-time worker who visits schools to speak about waste problems and composting techniques. School groups can also visit our composting demonstration site.

Grow To Eat Well in Portsmouth Schools

Thanks to a major Big Lottery grant, and generous matched funders, this ambitious 3-year project is just starting. Portsmouth schools will each be encouraged to run their own allotment. Pupils, staff and friends of the school will learn how to grow their own vegetables on ground specially prepared on the school site. The project will start with two ‘beacon’ schools, Charter Academy and Paulsgrove Primary, and will eventually bring in over half the 70+ schools in the city. Two project workers will travel between sites using a special electric vehicle, and an administrator will look after the office. Special importance will be placed on the use of compost made on-site from each school’s own organic waste. Our real logo will be based on the winner of a competition held in our beacon schools.
